Hi, my name is Amanda McQueens, the founder of Trans Pride Africa. Let me tell you a little bit about us.

Trans Pride Africa was born in June of 2020, during the global pandemic and out of necessity, to raise awareness about the plight of African transgender people during one of the most devastating pandemics in the history of the world. Before and during the pandemic, many African transgender men, women, and gender-nonconforming individuals are always the target of inhumane treatment in the African society they live in and in many nations around the world. They are at risk of being arrested by law enforcement agents or murdered by members of the public, with little or no justice. There are no job opportunities, rampant homelessness, and family rejection are the norm. Most cisgender Africans lack empathy for transgender people, because of their deep-rooted social beliefs, from health care providers who mock, berate and degrade Trans people’s humanity, to institutional discrimination at all levels of life. For example, schools, faith or religious spaces, recreational spaces, social platforms, work, and law enforcement. Educating the society, improving and maintaining the civil rights of trans individuals, is key to bringing much needed hope for the community to strive. In the same breath, we need to empower our transgender family members and friends by giving them safe spaces, like shelters, relief/feeding, and community engagement events, tackling much-needed health issues such as sex education/protections, mental health therapy, and hormone therapy. And not to forget, having adequate resources to employ experienced and qualified health care practitioners and counselors for psychosocial and cognitive support is essential to our community. For these major reasons, with the help of volunteers, we have done a great job so far, in elevating these issues with personal resources. We had a relief drive in February 2020 and in February 2021 we had another second-year relief drive, a seminar, a symposium, and a safe social event; miss trans-global Nigeria, which was partly funded by ISDAO.
